More About This Plant
The Guava Plant (Psidium guajava), commonly known as Amrood, is a tropical and subtropical fruiting shrub or small tree belonging to the Myrtaceae family. It is one of India's most widely grown and popular fruit plants because of its adaptability, productive growth and flavorful fruits.
The plant develops an attractive branching canopy with green leaves and small white flowers. Following successful pollination, the flowers develop into rounded, oval or pear-shaped guava fruits.
Depending on the cultivar, ripe guavas may have greenish-yellow to yellow skin, while the edible flesh can be white, cream, pink or red. Because this is a generic Amrood listing, the exact flesh colour, seed hardness, fruit size and sweetness should not be guaranteed unless the cultivar is known.
Guava performs well in both irrigated and comparatively dry regions and can tolerate a wider range of soil conditions than many other fruit trees. Well-drained soil, however, is preferable for healthy roots and productive growth.
One distinctive feature of guava cultivation in India is its ability to flower in several seasonal flushes. Commercial growers may regulate these flowering cycles through pruning and irrigation management to obtain the highest-quality crop at the preferred time of year.
For home gardeners, regular sunlight, moderate watering, organic matter and seasonal pruning are generally sufficient to maintain a healthy and productive plant.
