Soil
Rich, loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining soil. Ideal practical pH: Approx. 5.5–6.5.
Pruning
Cardamom requires relatively simple maintenance. Cut old shoots close to the base after they become completely unproductive.

More About This Plant

The Elaichi Plant, botanically known as Elettaria cardamomum, is the true Green Cardamom plant and belongs to the ginger family, Zingiberaceae.

It is a tropical evergreen perennial that grows from underground rhizomes and produces clusters of upright leafy shoots. Its long green leaves give the plant a lush tropical appearance, while flowering stems emerge closer to the base of the plant.

The flowers are pale greenish-white with attractive violet or purple markings. After successful flowering and pollination, small green capsules develop near the base of the clump. These capsules contain the aromatic seeds commonly known as Green Cardamom or Choti Elaichi.

Cardamom naturally grows beneath forest canopies, so it prefers filtered light, warm temperatures, high humidity and consistently moist but well-draining soil. Harsh direct afternoon sunlight can scorch the leaves and reduce plant performance.

The plant performs particularly well in humid tropical environments and is commercially associated with the shaded hill regions of southern India.

Although Cardamom can be grown successfully as an attractive foliage plant in containers, flowering and pod production require a mature plant along with suitable warmth, humidity, shade and growing space.

Elaichi / Green Cardamom Seasonal Care Guide
During spring, new shoots and active vegetative growth increase. Apply compost or balanced fertilizer, maintain consistent moisture and provide filtered sunlight. Mature plants may begin developing flowering stems.
During summer, maintain high humidity and consistent watering. Protect the plant from harsh afternoon sunlight and hot dry winds. Flowering can be active during this period, so avoid severe moisture stress.
During the monsoon season, Cardamom benefits from the naturally high humidity and warm conditions. Reduce additional watering according to rainfall, but make sure the soil drains properly. Prolonged waterlogging around the rhizomes must be avoided.
During autumn, continue moderate watering and organic feeding while the weather remains warm. Mature plants may continue developing capsules depending on their growing conditions.
During winter, growth may slow in cooler regions. Reduce watering slightly but never allow the root zone to become completely dry. Protect the plant from cold winds and temperatures below approximately 10–12°C.
Product FAQs
Is this the real Green Cardamom / Elaichi Plant?
Yes. Elettaria cardamomum is the true Green Cardamom plant that produces the aromatic spice commonly known as Elaichi or Choti Elaichi.
Does an Elaichi Plant need full sunlight?
No. Green Cardamom prefers partial shade and bright filtered light. Harsh direct afternoon sunlight can scorch its leaves. It naturally grows as an understory plant in humid tropical environments.
Can Elaichi Plant produce Cardamom pods at home?
Yes. A mature plant can flower and produce green Cardamom capsules when provided with suitable warmth, humidity, filtered light, consistent moisture and sufficient growing space. Container-grown plants may take longer to reach productive maturity.
Can Green Cardamom be grown in a pot?
Yes. Elaichi can be grown in a large, deep container with rich, well-draining soil. As the rhizome clump expands, the plant may require a larger pot or division into separate plants.
How tall does an Elaichi Plant grow?
A mature Green Cardamom plant generally reaches around 6–12 ft, depending on climate, soil, moisture and growing conditions. Regular removal of old shoots keeps the clump healthy and manageable.
