More About This Plant
The Black Grapes Plant (Vitis vinifera), commonly called Draksha, is a perennial woody fruiting vine cultivated for clusters of edible berries. The species belongs to the family Vitaceae and is one of the world's most widely cultivated fruit vines. Kew recognizes Vitis vinifera as the accepted species name.
The vine grows by means of tendrils and requires a strong support structure such as a trellis, pergola, bower or wire framework. Without pruning, grape vines can grow many metres long, but cultivated plants are trained to a manageable framework to improve sunlight exposure, airflow and harvesting.
Black grape cultivars produce fruits ranging from reddish-purple to deep purple or nearly black. Their characteristics vary considerably by cultivar: some are seedless table grapes, while others are seeded or more suitable for juice, raisins or processing. ICAR, for example, describes Manjari Manjula as a purple-black seeded table grape and Manjari Madhura as a high-yielding black variety suitable for table and munnakka use.
Grape cultivation in India is strongly influenced by pruning schedules. In some southern and western regions vines may be pruned twice per year, while North Indian vines are commonly pruned once during January–February. NHB notes that harvest may follow roughly five months after forward pruning under some commercial systems.
For healthy growth, grapes require full sunlight, well-draining fertile soil, structural support and regular pruning. TNAU recommends deep, rich loamy soil with good drainage and notes that pruning level varies with cultivar.
Because this is a generic Black Grapes Plant listing, berry size, seed presence, sweetness, bunch size and exact harvest season should not be fixed unless you know the cultivar being supplied.
